Skin Cancer

ENT is a surgical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, reconstruction and follow-up of skin cancers of the head and neck region.

More than half of all skin cancers occur in the head and neck region. The most common sites of skin cancer are the lower lip, nose and ear. These areas are not only highly sensitive, but present significant aesthetic challenges for reconstruction and healing.

With over 2,000 patients treated and followed for skin cancers of the head and neck region, Dr. Brousseau has extensive expertise in the field.

  • Depending on the type of lesion, its size and the patient's state of health, Dr. Brousseau offers several types of treatment for benign skin lesions:

    1. Cryotherapy

  • All patients who undergo a procedure or surgery for skin cancer are followed up by Dr. Brousseau free of charge for the first year.

    Thereafter, annual follow-up fees apply, at the rate of one visit per year, with additional treatments if necessary.

  • Cryotherapy involves the repeated application of liquid nitrogen to an area of the skin to burn cells by freezing.

    This technique is highly effective in treating pre-cancerous lesions, superficial skin cancers and certain benign lesions.

    This type of treatment often offers the best therapeutic option with very low aesthetic risks. Indeed, cryotherapy rarely causes scarring. It can, however, leave a slight hypopigmentation in people with very light or very dark skin.

    This type of treatment does not alter the structure of the skin, and provides an excellent pathological analysis should surgery be required at a later date.

  • All lesions that are surgically removed are sent to a specialized pathologist at a university center for pathological analysis.

    Depending on the complexity of the analysis, results are received within 2 to 4 weeks. Our support team will contact you with the results as soon as possible.

  • Most of the time, you can get an appointment the week after you contact us and get a surgery date the week after your visit.

    You do not need a referral from your doctor to consult Dr. Brousseau.

Treatments

    Cryotherapy

    Cryotherapy uses repeated applications of liquid nitrogen to burn superficial skin cells.

    It is useful for treating spots, seborrheic keratoses, acrochordons, actinic keratoses and non-invasive superficial cancers such as basal cell.

    This type of treatment is unlikely to cause scarring, and allows effective treatment of lesions with the best chances of healing.

    Cryosurgery

    Cryosurgery uses prolonged application of liquid nitrogen followed by curettage or local excision to treat lesions that are deeper or protrude from the skin.

    It is useful for thick seborrheic keratoses, acrochordons, more advanced actinic keratoses and superficial non-invasive cancers such as basal cell carcinoma.

    Biopsy

    Biopsy is used to remove a piece or an entire lesion with the aim of determining its nature.

    An anesthetic is injected, and an incision is made to remove a piece of the lesion or the entire lesion.

    The sample is analyzed by a pathologist, who can determine its nature and severity. More definitive treatment can then be offered.

    Exeresis

    Excision is performed under local anaesthetic to remove a lesion. Stitches may be necessary, depending on the lesion. To avoid leaving deep scars, the stitches used are never melting, and must be removed between 10 and 14 days after the procedure. Successive photos of the lesion are used by Dr. Brousseau to guide your care.

    Excision is useful for cysts, lipomas and skin cancers, among others.

    Reconstruction

    When skin cancer is advanced, reconstruction may be needed to close the defect created by its removal. This is known as reconstruction.

    This type of procedure is more advanced and often requires the creation of a flap or the use of a skin graft.

    This procedure is performed at the same time as the cancer removal, under local anaesthetic.
